What journey must one undertake to become an artist?
In 2017, when I was 24, I made a big decision to pursue art as my dream, which didn’t come without its cost: I gave up my master’s degree from a top-ranked university in the U.S.; lived in a broken old van in a parking lot for two and half years; living a rootless life across three countries and nine different cities; and carried the burden of mistrust from my parents and the constant self-doubt that I had just ruined my life.
Still, if given another choice, I would once again embrace the path of an Artist.
I am Sarah Weizhen Xu, a VFX and Concept Artist with a deep-rooted background in traditional painting.
My journey in art began with a focus on classical fine art, where I honed my skills through over five years of painting commissions, from which I seamlessly transitioned into digital art, merging traditional skills with modern techniques. My career is characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence in artwork, marked by acute attention to detail and a grasp of varied genres and styles, while the skills I developed in classical representational oil painting have been instrumental in refining my understanding of color, light, composition, and anatomy.
I am also actively engaged in learning the entire spectrum of 3D production and VFX pipeline, this learning journey encompasses a wide range of skills including modeling, texturing, lighting, and compositing.
On the cusp of obtaining my Master of Digital Media (MDM) degree from the Centre for Digital Media at Simon Fraser University, I eagerly anticipate stepping into a professional role in the VFX industry, while continuing to broaden my skill set in the vast realm of digital art.
